Bonanza (PA), Cotton (PA), Cotton (TX) Instrumental Tittyshakers, Teen, R’N’R

With help from Wimakaeler & Daddy Cool on Request.

Here is what I have found. I think maybe Numbers 1000 + 1001 may have been issued after 1964. Someone should be able to date these from the LH numbers on the label ?

("LH" was the master code used by Houston Records, Inc. from 1964 onwards. It was only used by people who did not have their own master numbers)

  1. I suggest a Texas or Louisiana adress as many local labels from these states used the Houston Records pressing plant. Or is the Pennsylvania adress for sure?

Also note the Big Bopper music publishing on one of the early releases. Not a proof but maybe a hint.

  2. "Buchanan recorded the wild instrumental title Mule Train Stomp for Swan in Philadelphia under his own name in 1961 and was on the Cotton label the following year on the hit The Jam - Part 1 by drummer Bobby Gregg and his Friends. "I had made a few demos in Philadelphia and he heard them," Buchanan said. I agreed. We did it and it was a hit." But they didn't get that famous and Buchanan sank into the club scene of Washington, D.C." off the Bear "Roy Buchanan" cd. I think maybe the label moved to Texas? for 2 that LH numbers? Still not Certain on PA? Thanks Mellow Dean

  3. Not sure at all. Wasn't familiar with this Cotton label and it was only a suggestion. Didn't know where the Pennsylvania location came from but it could very well be a Philadelphia label, too.

  4. Thanks for this – looks like it's getting complicated …

1000 & 1001 are COTTON (TX) – others are COTTON (PA). Preceding 1003 was BONANZA 1002 by KING JAMES (matrix nos run in same sequence). Matrices suggest that there is probably a 1001 - BONANZA or a different name????
    ------
Labels with the same name having an artist with the same name helps with the confusion...

KING JAMES on COTTON (TX) is James Broussard.
KING JAMES on BONANZA & COTTON (& HAL) (all Philly labels) is James Cephas

Hope this helps - or have I just muddied the waters a bit more?

  5. Thanks Daddy Cool That Cleared up a lot & makes it more clear. I knew Glen Goza was a Texas Artist and thought there may be two Cotton labels here not one. I've changed the post with the new info, but my tagging will need to be altered on download. Anybody know the owner of the Bonanza + Cotton (PA) labels or the Texas Label & its corrected location?

  6. Pretty certain that Cotton (TX) will be Houston - Gene Goza and The Basic Things (King James' backing) were both from there.
I'm unsure about Gene and Glen Goza but am pretty sure that they're different guys - both from Texas and both dead - it would be nice if someone has info on this (these?) guy(s).

  7. Gene & Glen resolved - they are different guys - and not siblings.
    Glen 1936-2000 - Gene 1937-2012. R.I.P.
