Re-up of a very old post on request. Loads more volumes to come.
Starday Records had seen 4star custom pressing service work, after Slim willet “Don’t Let The Stars” had become a hit. Realising the vast potential for new publishing material, new stars, royal-ties from airplay, and more income for the business.
From the Starday Story by Nathan D. Gibson with Don Pierce
“According to the original promotional letter from 1954, Pierce wrote, “When we receive your material it will be carefully reviewed, and if it is suitable for making records, we will agree to make 300 flex records on your own label . . . provided,
1. You give us the option to use the recordings on STARDAY LABEL on a royalty basis.
2. You give STARDAY RECORDS AN OPTION for your services as a recording artist.
3. We be given publishing rights on the songs recorded.”
“Several songs appeared on both the custom and main label series, though only a handful of artists eventually made the crossover including Jerry Hopkins,
Lucky Chapman, King Sterling, Hoyt Scoggins, Jimmy and Dorothy Blakley, Andy Doll, and Jimmy Simpson. Fees for the service were initially set at $115,
but by the mid’-sixties had risen to $150 per 300 records.”
Starday came up with a “win, win” idea of offering artists and bands the opportunity of making their own records using their own label designs. But with a few new features. If the artists did not have a label name or design, Starday used one of theirs, either the main yellow Starday Logo. Allowing the artist to be billed as A “Starday” artist without actually being signed to the label. Or its’ subsidiary Dixie label after 1958. Occasionally, the artists’ home address was also added, which is why the Dixie label custom pressing have so many alternate locations.
If the artist had not registered an original song, Starday would use one of its own publishing companies, such as Starday, Starrite Golden State or Tronic, providing Starday with another profit stream, a very shrewd move.
It offered studio time either using the house band or the singers own band. Starday then arranged to have a 45 pressed. Usually 300 copies. On better quality vinyl than the 4Star service offered. The Artist also got 100 addressed record mailers to which they called add a photograph of the Act. These were pre addressed to Radio Stations in a three state area. The artist / band paid all costs, so the outlay by Starday was nothing.
These were called Custom Pressing. I have added (SCP) in the tagging, although the original labels do not have this, just to separate SCP from the main Starday series.
Distribution was down to the artists themselves. Most were given away to radio stations, family and friends or sold at live shows.
If the artist / band came back to order more, as the record had taken off and was getting a lot of airplay on the radio, Starday had the option to repress on the main Starday labels and ride the wave.
The first (SCP) was issue 500 in 1953 & the last known 1186 in (1968)
Note : Starday did not have its own record pressing plant and shipped this job out to the pressing plant that gave them the best deal. This is why (SCP) are found with various pressing plant matrix.
Pressing plants used by Starday included
Coast (PD in matrix) / Plastic Products / Rite (CP matrix) / King (634 matrix)
Corrections additions welcome
