Chess (IL) 45rpm R'N'R Blues, Doo-Wop, Gospel Vol. 1 (1955)

I was asked why I missed Chess & Checker out of this series. This was because they are not really small independents, but big independents. Anyway Chi-town Bill has helped me fill in many gaps, so I have made a start.  He has sent be around 40 volumes but untagged, so it will take me a while to sort out doubles from what I have. Plus remove alt takes & tag with 45rpm labels. These volumes are not in chronological order. Chess started in 1949. The 1st volumes is from 1955. I'm guessing the earlier stuff will appear as I tag them. I will tackle Checker later. Bear with me as I'm packing to move house.

Chess Labels : Pressing plants had dead stock (Unused) Labels and it makes it hard to date issue's as 1st pressing on style of Chess label. They used up what ever stock they had and different pressing plants had alt types of labels in stock.

"Chess emphatically not being an early adopter of the 7-inch 45, 1469 is highly significant, as the first release from the label to appear on 78 and 45 simultaneously. (Chess 1458 and 1461 would be reissued on 45 rpm, in 1954.) Chess did not return to the 7-inch format until Chess 1487 came out, would not pick up the frequency of 45-rpm releases till Chess 1499, and would not make 45 rpm releases on every title until Chess 1604— which came out in 1955."

  1. Thanks for this wonderful collection.
I read somewhere that the original name of the brothers was CZYZ. I had a friend that was born in Ukraine and spoke many languages. I showed him this spelling and asked how he would pronounce it. He spent several minutes thinking and I could see he was not certain but he said "I think it would be Chess". I don't suppose it could be anything else.
